Even one of those signs that goes in the middle of the street reminding drivers of state law to stop for pedestrians or a full stop sign that will require drivers to stop at this intersection.

This is not "feet" from Kennedy Blvd. There is a crosswalk here, the state law indicates that pedestrians have the right of way in the crosswalk. "Adults" should not be driving if they can't follow driving laws.

Very important. Northbound drivers speed a lot here since it is slightly downhill.

It is current City policy to limit the installation of stop signs along arterial roadways. However, we will conduct a preliminary traffic assessment to determine what type of traffic control is warranted at this intersection. The preliminary assessment will also help identify if a more in-depth study is required. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for the preliminary study to be completed.

It is a dangerous crossroads and there should be a sign for cars to stop for pedestrians, especially with a school being a few feet from the intersection.
It is particularly problematic that cars are speeding up on pedestrians already on the crosswalk, having to cut on the opposite lane when the visibility is far from ideal as it’s on a hill, putting everyone in danger.

Pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks and should not be forced to walk out of their way to cross streets. We wouldn’t ask drivers to go out of their way for pedestrians so why do we expect it the other way?

@MKM: that's BS. There are people who need to cross to go up Magnolia. So they should walk up to JFK then walk back down?

This intersection is close to my house and I walk to Journal Square on Pavonia.
There are stop signs on both eastbound and westbound Pavonia Avenue.
The problem is with Tonnele Ave.

Cars do not slow down even though there are signs for pedestrians to cross. And there are lines painted to denote a pedestrian crossing area.

I agree. This is a hazardous intersection. Vehicles speed from Broadway's light to beat the light at JFK Blvd. often blowing horns at pedestrians. In addition, a water or sewer hole in the middle of this crosswalk has been left uncovered for years. When I pointed it out to a Suez technician, he said it was not part of his job.(to report it)

Agreed with how many drivers drive with no care for pedestrians or for traffic laws. Enough is enough. We live in a city. Not the burbs. Stop prioritizing bad drivers over the safety of our children and community.

Is there any update on this? This intersection is extremely dangerous. Does someone have to be killed for something to be done about this? My husband was almost hit by a car here, we were already crossing and the car sped up to swerve around us. I've seen this happen to another pedestrian too.

I'll try to prepare something for the town hall on June 11th (I have been planning to go to the intersection at rush hour and just recording the number of cars that would pass by before someone stopped to let pedestrains go) but I have never attended one of those, do you have any advice? I hope we can all work together to make Journal Square a better, safer neighborhood for all road users, not just prioritize cars.

This street continues to be a challenge and the city is dragging its feet. One day, someone is likely to get hurt or die, and the city should be held responsible. Tried crossing with my grandmother this weekend and cars wouldn’t even let her cross on the crosswalk.

I went to the crosswalk today to record how many cars would just pass by, and how many would stop. I was there for about half an hour, 2 cars stopped for a pedestrian to pass, about 20 didn't. I don't think it makes sense, the law is on our side, and we need to find a better way to enforce it. Maybe a speed bump in a reasonable place would help.

How about something like this? You press a button and the lights flash indicating that somebody is crossing. It's a shame that we need it rather than people obeying the law but maybe it would help?

It couldn’t hurt and until the city does a “study”, it might make crossing easier.
But how do we get the city to install this quickly?

@Basia, the sign I suggested is a little different. The ones there now are pretty much basic signs indicating a crosswalk that just happen to have a flashing border to make them more visible. An RRFB works like in this video:

I see, thank you for the video! That does look like it could be a lot better. What is your opinion on speed bumps? I think they would guarantee cars slowing down, but I'm not sure how their costs and the process of implementation would compare to a RRFB.

@ Basia. I just heard back from the city that they will be installing an RRFB at this intersection in the next 2-3 weeks (this timing may push slightly due to COVID-19-related delays in the manufacture, delivery, or installation of the RRFB). I'm generally supportive of speed humps but if my personal experience is any indication, the city will likely say that this section of Tonnele doesn't qualify because there are too many vehicles. Per NJ road design standards, if there are more than 3,000 vehicles per day, the road does not qualify for a speed hump. Unfortunately, the poor design of the road encourages many cars to use the road, which then makes the road ineligible for certain things that would slow down traffic.

I think this is part of a larger problem in our part of Jersey City (I'm in Journal Square between Kennedy and Tonnele) of too many people using our neighborhood as a cut through to other parts of the city who don't care about the safety and well-being of the people who live here. I've lost count of the number of times I've been honked at for driving the speed limit.

@johnnyrose Thank you so much! I think the RRFB would be an improvement. There are other RRFBs placed through Jersey City and I definitely think it helps. Once it goes up, we'll have to see how it goes.
