I totally agree! Its amazing how fast people will drive down residential streets like that. As a mom with 2 small children I know it only takes seconds for a young child to wander into the street so making sure that there is signs and lights is a great way to reduce the risk of a serious injury or death.

l live on elmwood ave 20 plus years .
i have the same issue. also the park alone southwood.
no park sighs or fence. very soon a child may be hurt .
the swings ect my be 20 feet from road. 3.30 in the spring
do not let your kids play there .high school is out

The only speed posting I see lower than 50KM/H is the 20Kmh/h signs in parking lots, and the 40 "unless otherwise posted" signs as you enter the city...

there are signs on Southwood stating "40 km/hr max"

why not use speed bumps on the street. after a speeding driver hits them a few times, they'll slow down.they're called 'sleeping policemen' in the south.

I live on Southwood as well and the amount of traffic on this street is unreal!! Just try backing out your driveway when Bingo lets outs, or slow down to turn into your driveway. People use this street as a raceway and I have alomost been hit numerous times just trying to get home.
At night you can hear people racing up and down the street. Never a cop around, and just try calling them, hours later when nothing is happening they show, that's useful!
Something needs to be done about this problem before a child gets hurt or worse killed.

well i agree it's like this all over the city with speeding in residential areas plus drivers that yield at stop signs and run street lights , if city police would start inforcing the law and give out tickets everyday then maybe these problems would slow down,they need atleast two patrol cars that just give out tickets all day everyday,but it seems they cannot be bothered

There are at least two "40 km/h max" signs on Southwood drive. I have seen them.

Why put stop signs on a road where there is no need to stop? And there ARE speed limit signs...I'm surprised if you live there you haven't seen them.

Actually, what we need is for 28th Street to become double-lane because driving on that road is ridiculous and very scary in the winter. If you end up having to drive behind somebody going 30 km/h (and that's not an unusual thing), it gets very annoying and it's really slow going. The twisty part between 4th and 2nd Ave E is ALWAYS slippery in the winter, we have to put up with kids and teenagers running across the road, idiots signaling that they plan on turning 3 blocks before they actually turn, and pretty much anything else you can think of that makes that drive infuriating. I avoid that street altogether if I can, and usually take Southwood just to avoid that

To PA Raised, maybe people are only going 30km because it is a school zone and that IS the posted limit?
It sounds like you may be one of the drivers thats is using Southwood as an expressway.

My Way: Don't make assumptions. My point was that this city needs to widen 28th to allow for the influx of traffic that happens on that street.

I'm talking about ppl doing 20-30 km down 28th on weekends, or any other time when there ISN'T school. Even so, the worst time to drive on that road is between 5 & 6...school zone limits end at 5:00, so whether there's a posted limit (which I don't recall actually seeing) or not, the limit is up at 5:00.

I don't know...maybe everyone likes driving really slowly in a lineup of 20-30 cars for 8 blocks, putting on their brakes every 5 minutes because everyone in front of you is doing it, and constantly checking your rearview to make sure the person driving super close to the back of you doesn't rear end your car, should you have to make a sudden stop because the person leading the way made a spur of the moment decision to stop at Harold's on the way home. And maybe you enjoy being behind a car that stops to let children cross the street, and cringe to see an impatient driver behind everyone pull out and drive past everyone through the intersection, hoping that that person either sees the kids and stops, or they get out of the way in time. And I bet you really enjoy something I saw this summer: big truck, tired of driving about 20 km/h down 28th (my foot never really touched the gas pedal), drives up onto the curb and passes everyone that way (about 5 cars), through the intersection right by Harold's, where children were standing on the curb to cross the street, then guns it the minute they get to the front, prob doing about 70. Maybe everyone prefers it that way, but I certainly don't.

And yes...I literally said I use Southwood to avoid 28th. At least you got that right, everything else: assumption. I drive on Southwood at 40 km/h...according to the posted speed signs...and curse the people who are tailgate me because they want to go faster. If I see children present anywhere on the street, I slow down and keep watch for them. I only take this road if I'm heading towards the southern area of WH, otherwise it's a roundabout route down 24th, or straight along 22nd. I admit, they need some sort of traffic control at 6th...but this city really needs to start adapting to the growing number of cars on the roads, especially a thoroughfare like 28th St, then perhaps those of us who are sick of being part of an elephant chain of cars won't feel the urge to find a less congested route.

Having a posted speed limit of 40km/h does nothing...people speed anyways and drive like crazy down southwood. I agree with putting speed bumps on the street. that would at least hopefully slow some people down.

@ barry...if police start enforcing traffic laws more and handing out tickets, then thats just going to give you one more thing to complain about on this website. I think everyone that complains on here should seek sunlight and go outside once in a while
