Agreed. I live around the corner and am surprised by the bread and animals every time I see it. The skunk situation is out of control. I smell it every day, too!

I concur.This has been an ongoing problem, that really needs to be addressed.

The skunks are out of control in this neighborhood.

I am very disappointed in this neighbor for not checking his facts. First the skunks are feeding on the uncovered garbage at 76 and 74 N Allen. The cans are never covered and are left for weeks without being put at the curb. Skunks feed on rodents attracted by garbage and decaying plant matter. As far as this property owners mental status, he is alert and I have not noticed any deficits when speaking to him.(I am a nurse with mental health evaluation training. In closing his yard is very well maintained.I also mow my sidewalk after mowing and trimming as it works well to vacuum the trimmings from the sidewalk. Thanks for being a concerned neighbor but lease check your facts so that the situation can be remedied.

Thank you for speaking up, Katie. This man is my landlord and I can say with certainty that I’ve never seen a skunk feed on any bread on the side lawn, especially considering it’s not out there during dark hours when skunks would be out. They are most certainly eating the garbage at the addresses mentioned in Katie’s comment. He is very sharp and isn’t “mowing the sidewalk”. He’s clearing the clippings back into the yard so passers by don’t slip on them.

I live around the corner, and just wanted to add... this area seems to be infested with Skunks!!! I see them.. and smell them almost every night!! I wish the City could help, as it's illegal for us home owners to relocate and costs hundreds of $ to hire someone. I did not bring them and shouldn't have to pay to remove them.

No one “brought them”. They’re animals that live outside. It’s really no one’s responsibility to relocate them considering they’re in their natural environment.

Skunks, like many other animals, do pose a health hazard if out of control, regardless of how much many of us love animals. What is being reported appears to be more than an isolated occasional skunk. I do agree that garbage is probably a big contributor. The garbage issue throughout Albany has not been dealt with in any effective manner and this is likely one of the byproducts of that. So, it seems, it is time the city either cuts off the food source or deals with the resulting infestation. May be too late to just cut off the food supply.

@ pine hills resident.. I don't actually think anyone brought them here...lol.. however, I think the City should help with population control in some way when the volume grows to be a neighborhood-wide, borderline infestation issue.

I would hardly call it an infestation. Either my sniffer is completely broken or there isn’t as many skunks as y’all are claiming. How do we know it’s more than one? As I stated before, I live in the house that the original poster was complaining about and have only smelled one skunk this entire summer.

I can confirm there are skunks in the area, somewhere between West Lawrence and North Allen St., though no idea where as we've not been able to see any.

The infestation is on the other side of the street. They are nesting and feeding from the garbage and resulting rodent population near 74 and 76 North Allen. There have been 2 dead skunks in front of 74-76 N Allen a few weeks ago. The smell from the remaining colony of skunks is so strong every night around 10 pm that I cannot open my windows or go outside in my yard. This problem as I stated in my original comment has NOTHiNG to do with a few pieces of bread which are immediately consumed by the birds. Skunks aren’t interested in white bread. They are omnivores and consume rotten garbage and the resulting rodents and only feed at night.

The bread is not what's attracting the skunks, it's 100 percent the few houses in the areas whose trash cans are constantly overflowing. Also this man you speak of is one of the nicest people in this neighborhood. I don't appreciate your comments about him.
