The road is covered with frivolous tar squiggles. You have to see it to believe it. The contractor spreading tar in cracks seems to have been paid by the gallon and not by the mile. Yesterday it was in the low 70s, but sunny, and the tar was already squishy enough to be unsafe. This will be a very unsafe surface for cycling when the temperature gets any warmer, and it is an important cycling route. It also is the route followed by hundreds of cyclists in July in the Norman Conquest.

I sent this issue to the Street Department and was informed that Norman has a proactive program on pavement preservation to seal cracks in the surface to provide many additional years of service life before costly repaving becomes required. Tar is not used to fill the pavement cracks. The method the city employs uses a flexible rubber placed under high heat that remains pliable but will not become liquid in the hot Oklahoma summer heat. Many locations in our city have considerable cracking and this method of preservation has been used for over five years without issue. Without performing preservation methods such as this, significant failures will occur causing great hazard to the motoring public on city maintained roadways.
Thank you
