I agree that there needs to be improved pedestrian crossing options on WFR.

The crossing at Glascock and WFR is great but a long, long walk for many Mordecai families crossing WFR at Frank to get to Conn Elementary.

I agree but also I think a crosswalk is needed at Sasser/ Mimosa and Wake Forest (closer to the Salvation Army / recreation area and right at a bus stop) Clearly something needs to be done along Wake Forest to improve pedestrain crossings, bicycling opportunities, etc. I think it should be reduced to 3 lanes (one for each lane of traffic and a center turn lane) with bicycle lanes on either side. There are many locations along Wake Forest that are unsafe for pedestrians and bus riders (check out the inbound bus stop near Courtland, talk about unsafe!!) Thanks for posting this.

The only way cars will stop for pedestrians at a crosswalk on WFR is if a traffic light is also installed. Speeding is not enforced on this stretch of road, when this was brought up to RPD speeding here was not a concern of theirs.

I've referred this to our Public Works Department. I will update this issue when I have heard back from them. Thanks for reporting.

Agreed! The current crossing situation at Wake Forest Road is very poor. Wake Forest Road runs right through an otherwise very walkable neighborhood with a school & Salvation Army center on one side and parks on both sides -- but WFR is so hard to cross as an adult, much less a child. In addition, the current crosswalk's walk timer barely gives you enough time to get off the curb. Thanks for reporting this issue.

Adding a crosswalk is a great idea. There is only a side walk on one side of Person. Having a designated area to cross would make it much more pedestrian friendly than crossing over to a street where cars are turning in and out.

I agree that this area is in desperate need of a pedestrian crossing due to the high number of people crossing WFR here on a daily basis. In the short term, I'd like to see the city at least add some pedestrian crossing stripes to the road and pedestrian crossing signs. This would probably come at minimal cost to the City but would provide some awareness to drivers that there is potential for pedestrians at this location. Long term a pedestrian light such as the one around the corner on Delway St. would be ideal.

Staff has reviewed this request for a signalized crosswalk on Wake Forest Road at Chestnut St. In order for a signalized crosswalk to be installed it must meet specific warrants in the FHWA publication titled the “Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices” (MUTCD). This Federal manual is fully adopted by Raleigh City Council and the NCDOT. A study was conducted at this location and the number of pedestrians crossing Wake Forest Road was very low and did not meet signalization warrants. Staff does not recommend installing a marked crosswalk at this location without some sort of traffic control device given the volume of cars that travel on Wake Forest and the low number of pedestrians. City staff has a policy not to install mid block crosswalks or crosswalks at uncontrolled intersections because it can cause a pedestrian to have a false sense of security. This policy is even more important when the request is for a high volume major thoroughfare, intended for conveying vehicular traffic. To increase driver awareness, the city will install a high visibility pedestrian warning sign in this vicinity to warn motorist that there are pedestrians in the area. Should conditions change such as a sidewalk installation on the west side of Wake Forest Road or a development that generates more pedestrian activities, we would be happy to take new counts and study this location again. The City strives to provide infrastructure and accommodations for all modes of transport especially walkers, however we must do so in a safe manner that complies with State and Federal regulations.

The low number of pedestrians reflects the fact that we have enough sense to not risk our lives crossing Wake Forest Road. The request for a signalized crossing means we want 'some sort of traffic control device'. Our Mordecai neighborhood is divided by a high-speed high- throughput four lane road.

Speeding violations are clearly not enforced on Wake Forest Road, this is a very unfriendly pedestrian strip of road.

Let me add a few more points.

There is a mid block crosswalk a few hundred feet north near the intersection of Wake Forest Road and Sycamore. It is on a curve and is very dangerous because cars ignore it. Why was this crosswalk added if there aren't very many pedestrians crossing this road?

Further, there is a button activated crosswalk further south near the sign for the Mordecai neighborhood.

Motorists will ignore the warning sign. This is a dangerous spot and it needs a button activated crosswalk. Try crossing at rush hour and you will see what I mean.

The city is well aware that there was a sidewalk on the west side of the road that was removed against the wishes of the neighborhood in the 1970's.

We'd like to invite city representatives to speak about this issue at a Mordecai CAC meeting in the next few months. CAC officers have discussed this topic, the responses to it on SeeClickFix, and the need to have a more public discussion about it.
